How long does it take to hear back from CMU? ›

Students applying under the Early Decision 1 Plan will be notified of our decisions by December 15. Students applying under the Early Decision 2 Plan will be notified of our decisions by February 1. Students applying under the Regular Decision Plan will be notified of our decisions by April 1.

Carnegie Mellon admissions is extremely selective with an acceptance rate of 11%. Students that get into Carnegie Mellon have an average SAT score between 1490-1570 or an average ACT score of 34-35.

Demonstrated Interest/Fit

Carnegie Mellon does not consider demonstrated interest in our admissions decisions.

CMU is academically rigorous, and somewhat open to interdisciplinary study.

The acceptance rate at CMU can vary slightly from year to year, but it generally hovers around 15%-17%. Admissions can be quite competitive for prospective students due to the prestige and quality of education that Carnegie Mellon offers.

Increased chances of admission: Applying ED typically results in a higher acceptance rate compared to Regular Decision (RD), as colleges prefer students who are committed to attending. For CMU, the ED acceptance rate has historically been higher than RD, so applying ED could boost your chances.

Typically, applicants have a minimum GPA of 3.33 (or its equivalent) or higher.

According to U.S. News, Carnegie Mellon is ranked #22 on its national college rankings list. That's a pretty high ranking, and combined with the low Carnegie Mellon acceptance rate, you may wonder if this elite university is an Ivy League school. Carnegie Mellon is not considered one of the eight Ivy League schools.

How many people does CMU waitlist? ›

For every 100 applicants, only 11 are admitted. This means the school is extremely selective. Meeting their GPA requirements and SAT/ACT requirements is very important to getting past their first round of filters and proving your academic preparation.

College officials said some of the factors contributing to those long-term enrollment losses were universal, including a decrease in high school graduates statewide. DeHaemers said one factor unique to CMU involved adjustments school leaders applied to online and distance education programs in 2016.

Carnegie Mellon typically releases regular decision admissions results around late March or early April. However, the exact date may vary each year, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on your email, the Carnegie Mellon admissions website, and your applicant portal for any updates on the decision release date.

If any portion of the required or department supplementary materials are delayed, the process can take longer. Students who have not received an admission decision six weeks after their complete admission file is received should contact Applications Processing (989-774-4444) for assistance.

Within one to five business days of submitting your Common Application, the Office of Admission will send you an email notifying you that we've received your application. You can then visit your Where Am I in the Process? portal to track admission and financial aid documents that we've received from or sent to you.
