Advances in Geoheritage Mapping: Application to Iconic Geomorphological Examples from the Italian Landscape

In the framework of geosite management, specific targeted symbols for geomorphological legends are still lacking. Concerning geosites of geomorphological interest, geomorphological mapping requires targeted symbols in relation to goals and applications, either concerning geomorphic hazards and risk detection or the enhancement of resources, in particular those related to cultural heritage and, hence, geoheritage. A new methodology for mapping geo(morpho)heritage on geomorphological maps is presented in this paper. Nine iconic examples from the Italian landscape, selected in different morphogenetic and morphoclimatic contexts, are proposed to test the methodology in relation to point, polyline and polygon features. Moreover, guidelines for mapping are suggested according to the importance of the site and to the complexity of processes characterizing each case study.

Fieldtrips and Virtual Tours as Geotourism Resources: Examples from the Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Global Geopark (NW Italy)

In the 20th anniversary year of the European Geopark Network, and 5 years on from the receipt of the UNESCO label for the geoparks, this research focuses on geotourism contents and solutions within one of the most recently designated geoparks, admitted for membership in 2013: the Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Global Geopark (Western Italian Alps). The main aim of this paper is to corroborate the use of fieldtrips and virtual tours as resources for geotourism. The analysis is developed according to: i) geodiversity and geoheritage of the geopark territory; ii) different approaches for planning fieldtrip and virtual tours. The lists of 18 geotrails, 68 geosites and 13 off-site geoheritage elements (e.g., museums, geolabs) are provided. Then, seven trails were selected as a mirror of the geodiversity and as container of on-site and off-site geoheritage within the geopark. Geotourism in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (central Italy): the example of Mount Greco and Chiarano Valley

The geomorphological landscape of the Abruzzo region is a great example of a variety and complexity of processes and morphogenetic events as well as all the Italian territory. Here, complex Mesozoic-Cenozoic palaeogeographies are still reflected by the main mountain chains of Abruzzo and offer scientists and tourists imaginary journeys through ancient, now vanished, coral atolls and blue deep seas. Valleys of glacial or fluvial origin, alluvial fans, present and paleolandslides still preserve the memory of these ancient landscapes. In Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, where all of these landscapes are incorporated, the educational enhancement of geological and geomorphological themes has been pursued, with the creation and installation of information panels, theme trails and geotourist maps. Long-term geomorphological evolution in the Abruzzo area, Central Italy: twenty years of research

The most recent research studies into the long-term landscape evolution of the Abruzzo area, carried out over the last twenty years at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, are based on an integrated approach incorporating structural geology and geomorphology and, in particular, the geomorphometry of topographic and hydrographic aspects, geological and structural-geomorphological surveys and mapping supported by morpho-stratigraphic and chronological constraints. The geomorphological analyses have allowed us to outline the main stages of geomorphological evolution and to identify the factors that have contributed to the landscape shaping of the Apennine Chain, the Adriatic Piedmont and the fluvial plains and coastal sectors, up to the Tremiti islands.
